General Purpose
The newly established College of Engineering (CoE) at the University of Guelph is seeking a dynamic and experienced Manager, Technical Services to lead the College’s technical operations that underpin our teaching, research, and interdisciplinary student experience. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth of an expanding academic unit and to help shape the technical and operational infrastructure that supports our active community of faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students, and internal and external partners.
Reporting to the Director, Operations, the Manager, Technical Services plays a critical leadership role in administering and executing the technical operations of the CoE. This position works closely with the Dean and Academic Department Chairs to oversee the performance, planning, and development of technical services across the College, ensuring alignment with the requirements of engineering academic programs, faculty research, and interdisciplinary student experiences. The role ensures the reliability, efficiency, and strategic alignment of technical services with the College’s and University’s broader goals, and is responsible for supervising technical staff, supporting infrastructure developments, and ensuring consistent, high-quality service delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Technical Operations Management - Oversee the day-to-day technical operations of the College, including specialized laboratories, workshops, shared spaces, and research infrastructure; ensure efficient use of resources, timely resolution of technical issues, and effective maintenance of equipment and facilities; develop and implement standard operating procedures.
- Team Leadership & HR Management - Lead a cross-functional team of technical staff, lab coordinators, technicians, and machinists; provide support to research teams and student groups; oversee recruitment, performance management, coaching, training, and scheduling; foster a culture of safety, collaboration, and service excellence within the technical services team(s).
- Strategic Planning & Project Management - Contribute to long-term strategic planning for the College’s technical infrastructure; coordinate technical projects, space and facility upgrades, and related planning initiatives in collaboration with academic and administrative leadership.
- Budget & Resource Management - Manage operational and capital budgets for technical services; oversee procurement and expenditure monitoring; ensure cost-effective service delivery; prepare proposals and justifications for new equipment and infrastructure investments.
- Compliance, Health & Safety - Ensure all technical operations comply with university policies, environmental regulations, and health and safety standards; maintain safety programs, coordinate training, and lead audits and inspections.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in engineering management or a related field required.
- Undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline required; priority consideration will be given to candidates with a background in mechanical engineering.
- P.Eng designation preferred (or eligibility/intent to pursue).
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or related certification an asset.
- Minimum of 6 years of relevant technical and supervisory experience; experience within an academic or research-intensive environment is an asset.
- Demonstrated expertise in engineering laboratory operations, research infrastructure, instrumentation, and technical systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills; experience leading cross-functional teams.
- Experience with budget oversight, procurement, project management, and health and safety compliance.

The target hiring salary for this position is minimum and up to 96% of midpoint for the salary grade.
