About This Opportunity

This unique part-time position is available to a Family Physician with a Care of the Elderly Certificate. The position covers services for patients living in Hants County, referred by their primary care providers who wish to refer their patients for concerns such a Falls, Memory Loss, Polypharmacy, Dementia, Anxiety, Depression, Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia, Caregiver Burnout and Capacity Assessments. Referrals may come from the Community (out-patient), in patient ( mainly Hants Community Hospital) and local Nursing Homes. With regards to volume, on average a physician in this role can expect to see approximately 130 new consults a year and many follow ups. In this role you can expect to collaborate with teams that include Continuing Care Coordinators, Social Work and Nursing, Geriatric colleagues and Seniors Mental Health in Halifax for complex cases, out-patient Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy, Seniors Link Program in Kings County and the Alzheimer’s Society of NS. This position is remuneration through the AFP at $160.00/ per hour, for a maximum of 16 hours per week.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Examine patients and take their histories, order diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures; advise patients on health care, health promotion, and disease prevention
  • Consultation and referral to other medical practitioners’
  • Act as a patient’s advocate
  • Prescribe and administer medications and treatments, inoculations and vaccinations
  • Report deaths, contagious and other diseases as per Nova Scotia Public Health requirements

  • part-time/ 16 hours per week
Qualifications
  • Eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS)
  • Eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
  • Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
