Medicago is a growing biotechnology company developing and commercializing vaccines and therapeutics based on innovative plant technology with facilities in Canada and the United States.

As a member of the company’s senior management team, this position provides innovative leadership and direction to the Engineering Services, Maintenance & Metrology Services, Facility Operational Compliance, Utility Services and Environmental, Health & Safety functions in line with the company’s Strategic Plan and Manufacturing objectives. This function is responsible for all Medicago’s sites in Canada and US.

As the Senior Director of Engineering and Maintenance you will be responsible for the engineering and facility program development and management, including major investment programs/projects. This position ensures a structured and effective engineering platform and maintenance strategies, that are aligned with operational priorities and objectives on all Medicago sites, in alignment with Company strategy and goals.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provide leadership and broad general direction and guidance to the Engineering Services, Maintenance/Metrology Services, Utility Services and Health-Safety & Environment functions in line with the company’s Strategic Vision / OPO Plan.
  • Accountable for all engineering project management deliverables to include identifying and assigning project resources, defining scope, timeline, and budget of the projects, oversight of PDP, quality and other standards; performance metrics and reporting.
  • Responsible for creating an empowered organization while maintaining a competent well trained efficient and well-motivated workforce in the areas under the supervision of this position.
  • Ensure compliance with company and government regulations with regards to all activities falling within the scope of responsibilities of this position.
  • Lead the “Best Practices” Project Management process and Industry trends ensuring that the Engineering Management group at each of the sites manage the group’s overall capital plan in a coordinated and effective manner consistent with approved policies and procedures.
  • Identify business opportunities (i.e. capital investments) assessing their feasibility (benefits, risks, costs, etc.) and proposing plans to senior management and the Executive Committee. Assess the internal business requirements and the current use of systems and technology to identify the mission objectives and specific action programs for the engineering function consistent with business objectives.
  • To engineer programs, develop tools and resources to facilitate the integration of developing technologies and maintain state-of-the-art approach for all plants and facilities.
  • Embeds a safety-first culture within the organization and ensures employees are aware of workplace safety and environmental procedures and policies.
  • Work with technology transfer and process development groups to assure success in process start-ups and process improvements.
  • Ensure engineering, maintenance and reliability of facilities and equipment to meet Pharmaceutical standards and commercial requirements
  • Integrate programs with a bottom-line focus as well as personal goal development, aligning individual and team objectives to company performance.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervision of a functional area that includes two or more departments; generally supervised through two or three levels of subordinate managers. Requires advanced planning and frequent coordination with other departments.
  • Decisions set division-wide direction, policies and precedents. Decisions are made on highly complex matters involving large and long-term commitments of resources. Decisions typically affect more than one major segment of the company and can be reversed or modified only at a high cost to the company.
  • Work consists primarily of widely diverse duties and responsibilities requiring analytical, constructive and/or innovative thinking to develop solutions.
  • Complex engineering solutions to technical and operational issues that surround the physical elements of vaccine development and manufacturing.
  • Organizational development issues of both structure and substance that require new and innovative approaches to resolve and further develop.
  • Interacts frequently with senior municipal government officials as well as Provincial Ministry and State officials associated with regulatory approvals for the sites.

Compétences recherchées

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical or related technical degree)
  • Embedded Software experience is preferred.
  • 15 + years of progressive experience in facilities engineering and management roles in the Biologic or Pharmaceutical (cGMP) industry, including experience in GMP facility construction and commissioning projects.
  • 10 + years progressive experience in the leadership of people and/or leading projects/programs.
  • Strong business acumen, results focused, strategic thinker and relentless about execution.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and project management skills.
  • Bilingual.
