Description
The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research, and teaching hospitals, treating over 700,000 patients annually. The Adult Operative Services portfolio supports surgical access for multiple specialties, including Neurosurgery, OHNS, Urology, General Surgery, Orthopedic Trauma, Plastics, Burns, Spine, iMRI, and Solid Organ Transplant Services. This position is within the Pre-Admission Clinic, where the Unit Clerk plays a key role in preparing patients for surgery and ensuring a smooth pre-operative experience. As the first point of contact for patients and families, you will provide exceptional service and support in a fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities: Greet and register patients, ensuring accurate documentation and scheduling. Coordinate patient flow and diagnostic appointments. Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team. Perform clerical duties including word processing, filing, and data entry. Manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail. Physical & Role Requirements: This is a patient-facing role requiring strong communication skills and the ability to multitask effectively. The position is physically demanding, involving frequent walking and movement throughout the clinic.
As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.
A one-year Unit Clerk certificate (with practicum component) from a recognized post-secondary institution is required. Must have successfully completed a recognized course in medical terminology (An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered). Connect Care experience. Demonstrated competency in Excel and Word required. Accuracy and attention to detail essential. Able to recognize and maintain confidential information.
Experience Netcare. Proven interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
