Etches NICU, located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital! Our 69-bed unit is one of the busiest and most specialized NICUs in Canada, serving patients from across Northern Alberta, the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. In a setting defined by high acuity and rapid pace, we care for infants with complex and urgent healthcare needs. WHAT SETS US APART: We utilize a Family Centered Care philosophy within an interdisciplinary team model and are proud to be the only NIDCAP (Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program) training center in Canada. A dedicated Resuscitation and Stabilization Team (RST) responds to the High-Risk case room at the Lois Hole Hospital. WHAT YOU’LL DO: As a Licensed Practical Nurse in our high-performing tertiary care unit, you’ll play a vital role in delivering safe, effective, and efficient care to some of our most vulnerable patients, newborns requiring specialized support. As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is expected to function at the full scope of practice as defined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta and may be required to complete a self-assessment and math exam. A minimum of one year of current experience in a tertiary-level Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong critical thinking skills, including sound clinical judgment and effective problem-solving abilities. Proven experience in patient teaching, both verbal and written is essential. High-level time management and organizational skills are also required to succeed in this fast-paced and demanding environment. Basic computer literacy, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a strong Family Centered Care philosophy are required. Note this position may be eligible for an educational opportunity: 3-week classes beginning November 3, 2025. The incumbent will be trained to have a thorough understanding of the care of the level 2 neonatal patients. Successful pass of a Math Calculation Competency Assessment of 90% is required to be considered for hire.
Advanced physical assessment competency is preferred. Recent acute care experience, post-partum/mother baby care, or pediatrics experience is an asset. Please note: Preference will be given to candidates with experience working to the full scope of LPN practice, including medication administration (IV included) and advanced physical assessment competencies.
