SUPPORTIVE HOUSING WORKER.
Your part in Mainstay's mission is to promote recovery, independence and quality of life as
i) site support, ii) community developer, and iii) agent of the landlord to our tenant members.

Position Type: Current Vacancies are both Temporary (12-18 months contract) and Regular Full-time.
Location(s): Assignment to a program or portfolio of locations within an area of the City, determined during orientation.
*Can involve working alone. Must be willing to travel by transit or drive.
Starting Salary: $51,000 for 35 hours per week. Unionized with Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU).
Residential worksite(s) and office hours: Currently 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Paid for 7 hours. Includes one hour total unpaid meal / breaks.
*Position can be expected to involve evening shifts (e.g. 1:00 - 9:00 p.m. to be determined). Evening hours can be expected to serve tenant members living in our largest residential building programs, and are compensated with small shift premium.
All Supportive Housing Workers eventually rotate with all department SHWs occasional on-call after hours/weekend work. Compensation is a flat fee unless called out to site, in accordance with Collective Agreement.
This position reports to one of a team of Managers, Tenant Member Services.
Your three-part role is to assist tenant members living with serious mental illness, including addictions, in their successful tenancy by:
- Assessing the needs of tenant members and working with them and their supports to develop and implement meaningful housing support plans;
- Supporting tenant member involvement in decision-making processes;
- Assisting tenant members to achieve successful tenancy outcomes;
- Providing emotional and practical support;
- Co-creating, and supporting, community development initiatives with tenant members;
- Facilitating life-skills development;
- Intervening in, and de-escalating, crises and conflicts;
- Providing referral to, and collaborating with, appropriate health and community social services;
- Participating in evaluation, planning, group meetings and supervision; and
- Addressing breaches of the lease agreement with Mainstay or private landlord, under the Residential Tenancies Act, and appearing at the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board as required (OLTB).
- 3 to 4 years’ experience working with homeless people and/or people living with serious mental illness including substance use, as well as people who have experienced violence and social isolation;
- Undergraduate degree /College diploma in social services or a related field;
- Understanding of homelessness/poverty and how these impact on people living with mental illness;
- Knowledge of and proficiency in current approaches for adult mental health and addictions, anti-oppression, harm reduction and client-centred principles;
- Full understanding of the provicial Human Rights Code, and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA);
- Demonstrated conflict resolution and crisis prevention and intervention skills;
- Ability to work well a part of a multi-disciplinary team; and independently as a self-starter;
- Dependable attendance record upon which tenant and team members can rely;
- Excellent interpersonal, networking and communication skills; and
- Computer Literacy
- Direct experience in supportive housing;
- Knowledge of Ontario's Residential Tenancies Act and the Mental Health Act; and
- Familiarity entering data into tenant member Information System(s) for tracking and reporting to private / government funders.
