As the Elementary Engagement & Media Project Coordinator, you will plan and lead daily in class and extracurricular activities for elementary and middle school students. This project aims to develop school spirit, self-esteem, and well-being among students, and to contribute to creating a more positive and engaging school atmosphere. The position entails working with the school administration, teachers and other partners such as the St-Mary’s First Nation Band Council.

Youth Fusion is a registered charity organization that tackles increasing absenteeism and drop-out rates in New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario, by engaging students in motivating experiential learning activities. Youth Fusion has been working with indigenous peoples in Quebec since 2010 and in Ontario since 2018. We have 3 main areas of activities:

  • Organizing extracurricular activities;
  • Working with teachers to develop and lead classroom activities that help make school learning more relevant for teenagers;
  • Working with local organizations to help create links between the school and the community.

Conditions

  • Contractual position from September to June (10-month contract, renewable).
  • 30 hours/week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The project coordinator will be responsible for organizing and facilitating some or all of the following activities.

  • Oversee elections for class representatives, and school president and vice president; facilitate weekly student council meetings including activities to foster teamwork, communication skills, respect, and leadership among the student council members; assist the council in organizing events for the student body and the community. You may also need to assist the student council with fundraising activities as needed.
  • The Elementary Engagement & Media project coordinator will work with teachers to integrate film-making activities directly into the classroom. The project coordinator will guide students through the process of making a film - including scriptwriting, story boarding, camera work, and editing. He or she will also work with teachers to ensure that the film project meets curriculum objectives.
  • Activities done in collaboration with teachers may include: Healthy cooking & nutrition workshops, poetry, music, science, communications skills, etc., depending on the project coordinator and the school administration’s skills & interests.
  • Supervise and animate recess activities and/or manage a welcoming space where students can spend time between classes or after school. This responsibility can be shared with another Youth Fusion Project Coordinator.
  • Activities take place in both an extracurricular and a classroom setting. These activities aim to promote literacy and creative self-expression, while building links between the school and community. Depending on the project coordinator’s area of expertise, activities may include:
  1. Radio broadcasting club: Assist live and/or pre-recorded content for a weekly 1-hour radio show on the community radio (on-site training will be provided).
  2. Photography club: Develop and facilitate workshops for students to explore photography techniques and use photography as a form of self-expression.
  3. Arts: Facilitate workshops in fine arts or crafting techniques such as painting, collage, sculpture, printing, graffiti, digital art, mural-making, etc.
  4. Creative Writing and Anthology: In collaboration with teachers, conduct classroom workshops to create content for a poetry anthology, written compositions, interviews, etc.;
  5. Other media: You may also explore other forms of media and self-publishing such as “zine-making,” community mapping, stop-motion animation, blogging, etc. (for an example, please see: artistsofwaswanipi.blogspot.com).
  • You will work with the Student Council and school to help organize and animate a week-long, anti-bullying event, with a focus on building confidence and healthy relationships. Training and resources on this topic will be provided.
  • Youth Fusion will organize an end-of year event in Fredericton. You will help organize a delegation of youth who are actively involve in media activities to participate in this event and other cultural activities.
  • In order to successfully organize these activities and maintain regular communication, the project coordinator should:
  1. Recruit participants and encourage students to actively participate in leadership and media activities;
  2. Collaborate with school administration, teachers and local organizations (such as the radio station, youth centre, cultural department) to promote greater participation of community members;
  3. Manage the Youth Fusion blog.

ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS

  • Attend Youth Fusion training week;
  • Fill-out and submit biweekly time sheets, reports and expense reports;
  • Managing a small budget for the project and the material inventory;
  • Communicating with Youth Fusion and the school principal on a weekly basis;
  • Taking part in the monthly phone call with Youth Fusion coordinators from the same program;
  • Surveying students and local partners to get feedback about activities;
  • Submitting a midterm and final report, including a full list of activities and participants.

Our mission at Youth Fusion is to engage at-risk youth in projects that motivate them to attend school. You will be working closely with school administration, local staff, and Youth Fusion’s Director of Educational Programming to ensure that this project meets its objectives. We are looking for a candidate who is open to learning about Wolastoqey culture and adapt our program to the realities of the community where you will be working. You are encouraged to become an active participant in school life and are welcome to suggest additional activities based on your abilities and interests.

EDUCATION

  • Must be a student or recent graduate in Film Production, Communications, Art Education, or any related field with some experience in film;

EXPERIENCE

  • Must have experience working with youth;
  • Experience with First Nation and Inuit communities and knowledge of Indigenous issues in Canada is an asset;
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural context is an asset.

SKILLS

  • Must have a strong desire to be a role model for the school’s students, and act as an agent of social change;
  • Must be able to take initiative and work independently;
  • Must be able to work in English. Ability to work in French is a strong asset for this position;
  • Knowledge of the Maliseet-Passamaquoddy language an asset;
  • Motivation, initiative, persistence, communication skills, vision and imagination are essential.
