General information

The Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics at the Faculty of Science and Engineering of Laval University is seeking applications for a tenure-track position in the field of viral ecology.

The Department comprises 18 professors who specialize in microbiology, biochemistry, biophotonics, synthetic biology, systems biology, and bioinformatics. Over 300 undergraduate and 80 graduate students are enrolled in our training programs.

Université Laval, located in the heart of Quebec City, is a large research and teaching university known for its culture of excellence in teaching and research.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop a research program in the field of viral ecology. Specifically, the research would aim to characterize the diversity and dynamics of viruses and their relationship with their host and the environment. This research would combine genomics, functional genomics and experimental approaches.
  • Secure funding from major granting agencies.
  • Recruit and mentor graduate students.
  • Participate in the teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses offered in French by the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics.
  • And more generally, participate in the development and activities of the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics, the Faculty of Science and Engineering and Université Laval.

Selection criterias

The candidate is expected to demonstrate potential for and skills in teaching and research. She or he must have a solid background in microbiology or related sciences and develop an independent research program in the field of viral ecology.

In addition, he or she must

  • Hold a PhD in a discipline relevant to the research area covered by this position.
  • Have a postdoctoral experience or its equivalent.
  • Demonstrate a strong potential to develop and lead an autonomous, original, and high-level research program in the field identified.
  • Demonstrate an interest in recruiting and supervising graduate students.
  • Demonstrate an aptitude or potential for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, for mentoring of graduate students, and a commitment to pedagogical innovation.
  • Demonstrate potential for or commitment to community service.
  • Master French, both orally and in writing (or commit to acquiring it within the deadlines set out in the collective agreement).
  • Demonstrate a match between her/his professional potential and the key competencies required to perform the professorial function. This includes:
    • Analysis, synthesis, and judgment.
    • Creativity and innovation.
    • Communication skills.
    • Interpersonal skills and openness
    • Ability to work as part of a team and with partners.
    • Autonomy and sense of responsibility.
    • Sense of ethics and duty.
    • People management.
  • Demonstrate an interest in participating in the development of Université Laval's Félix-d'Hérelle collection.
Conditions

Conditions

  • This is a regular, full-time, tenure-track position.
  • The rank will be determined based on experience.
  • There will be a teaching release during the first year.
  • The annual salary (12 months) for this position, as per the Université Laval collective agreement, ranges from $96,407 to $170,914 depending on rank and step.
