Working as a member of the inter-professional team, the Registered Nurse (RN) will provide specialized comprehensive services to the Outpatient Mental Health Program and Crisis Services at Scarborough Birchmount, General and Centenary Campuses and act as a Addictions expert and Clinical Liaison providing counselling and support to both Inpatients and Outpatients.


• Working in close collaboration with Psychiatric and Medical staff to ensure a timely response to a client′s changing health status and needs
• Screening and completing baseline assessments for patients identified as requiring addiction services, including substance use, medical, mental health and psychosocial histories, using tools/procedures such as the CIWA-AR, COWS, CAGE, vital signs, or Point of Care Urine Drug screening
• Coordinating patient care in collaboration with the patient/family and members of the Interdisciplinary team,
• Coordinating discharge planning in collaboration with the patient/family and members of the Interdisciplinary team,
• Connecting patients to primary care providers if they do not have one
• Providing patients with harm reduction advice and materials
• Providing direct patient care focusing on health promotion and maximizing patient′s safety and function to support patients accessing residential services in non-medical setting, monitoring of withdrawal symptoms and providing health screens
• Actively participates in regular team meetings and case conferences
• Liaising with community based providers, advocating on behalf of patient and their families and participation in inter-professional patient and family conferences as needed
• Supporting a Harm Reduction model in keeping with a patient-centred approach
• Demonstrating an ability to be sensitive to cultural and ethical issues


• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Registered Nurse
• Previous experience with buprenorphine/naloxone inductions and medical assisted withdrawal management from opioids and alcohol
• Sound working knowledge of hospital nursing functions, current trends in nursing, health care and concurrent disorders
• Previous experience in clinical work with concurrent disorders and withdrawal management including the use of COWS and CIWA protocols
• Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgement and to assess situations and problems efficiently and effectively
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem solving skills
• Ability to work well within an inter-professional team and to foster effective working relationships
• Ability to exercise initiative and observe strict confidentiality
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Scarborough Health Network′s comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff, patient and environmental safety and participate in regular in-service in this area
• Proven good attendance record and ability of maintaining same standard


• Previous experience starting and monitoring IVs, including IV diazepam and rehydration solutions
