This position will report primarily to the Laboratory Manager or delegate and as directed by the Charge Histotechnologist and Pathologists regarding technical and clinical matters in providing Laboratory services

Responsibilities:

• Perform accurate screening, timely evaluation and interpretation of both conventional and liquid based gynecological and non-gynecological smears to detect malignant cells.
• Check each slide for labeling accuracy to ensure clinician receives correct results. Errors must be documented and reported to appropriate personnel for correction
• Review each slide to check overall quality of preparation such as staining intensity and quality, proper cover slipping, and stain artifacts to help insure diagnostic accuracy
• Participate in Quality Improvement, IQMH proficiency testing and accreditation programs in the laboratory which may include the development of new or improved methods and procedures
• Performs quality control for all equipment and troubleshoots malfunctioning instrumentation as necessary
• Maintain documentation as it applies to daily workload, follow-ups, quality assurance and rotation assignment
• The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to a healthy and safe workplace for self and others (staff, patients, families, etc.) by taking all reasonable precautions and working in compliance with hospital related policies, health and safety legislation

Requirements:

• Graduate of a laboratory technology program recognized by CSMLS
• Completion of a Diagnostic Cytotechnologist certification with the CSMLS with a minimum of 3 years recent related experience in the Cytology department
• Experience with a Laboratory Information System and a Pathology Information System
• Demonstrated current knowledge of cytology laboratory testing, techniques, methods and procedures
• Knowledge of legislation and government policies and procedures related to laboratory technology
• Well-developed interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently, quickly and accurately under stressful conditions with minimal supervision
• Physical ability to carry out the duty of the position
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team
• Demonstrated conflict resolution, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Ability to prioritize issues and workload, and complete assigned work
• Demonstrated ability to demonstrate procedures to other employees and students
• Demonstrates values consistent with SHN′s Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation
• Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, and environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education in this area

• Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community
