Senior Financial Analyst - Regular Full-Time - Sunnybrook Research Institute (201126) Toronto, ON, CA Posted: 5/1/2020 2:09:09 PM


Reporting to the Manager, Research Finance, this position will be responsible for the following:

  • Manage a group of grant accounts (pre-award and post-award) with higher complexity
    • Foster strong working relationship through partnering with researchers to understand their needs and concerns and collaboration with grant accountants in producing appropriate financial analysis
    • Meet with researchers as required to review activities within the individual grant accounts and ensure relevant financial analysis is completed for all the PI’s accounts
    • Prepare monthly, quarterly or annual reporting as required to granting agencies in compliance with policy and program guidelines
    • Prepare financial projections by PI’s covering their entire grant portfolio
    • General accounting duties including journal entries, reconciliations of various accounts, billings, invoices, and disbursement requisitions
    • Interact with granting agencies and coordinate with external institutions and internal stakeholders concerning regular grant activities and reporting
    • Responsible for the accounting and reporting for SRI core operations
      • Manage core cost centre annual and multi-year expense budgets
      • Monthly report and analyze the actual activities in core cost centres, as well as variance explanation
      • Meet with core cost centre managers regularly to better understand their core operations
      • Monthly perform a detailed review of all core revenue, determine source of variances and if any actions are required
      • Prepare balance sheet account reconciliations, closely monitor activities recorded, and maintain sub- ledgers for key balance sheet accounts
      • Prepare monthly internal financial statements for SRI and SRA
      • Prepare additional financial report/information packages as required by management
      - Day to day supervision and subject matter expert
      • Train, supervise and lead junior staff by providing technical guidance, assessing and monitoring progress, and providing
      • Act as the subject matter expert on a subset of major granting agencies’ rules and regulations
      • Work with other senior financial analysts to develop and implement analytical tools for the research finance team
      • Assist SRI senior level management with complex financial analysis and planning matters
      - Institutional external reporting, interfacing with the auditors and other tasks
      • Prepare and submit institutional reports for SRI and SRA to the applicable external parties
      • Audit lead for SRI and SRA interim and year-end audits
      • Create and maintain various structures in the accounting system (SAP), databases and master files
      • Act as back-up for other senior financial analysts during vacation
      SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
      • CPA/CGA/CMA designation is required
      • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a financial reporting or analysis role, with focus on providing information for analysis, reporting and decision making purposes
      • Strong understanding of accounting concepts and generally accepted accounting principles, including knowledge of PSAS
      • Hands-on experience with preparation of financial statements and supporting schedules, along with month end and year end processes, in particular dealing directly with auditor inquiries
      • Superior analytical, planning, and organizational abilities
      • A self-starter with the ability to handle multiple job responsibilities, set priorities, problem solve and work with all levels of staff while appreciating the responsibility of meeting tight and conflicting deadlines
      • Strong attention to detail and committed to continuous improvement
      • Display initiative and sound professional judgment and integrity
      • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a strong customer centric approach
      • Flexibility to work off-hours in time sensitive situations, especially during month and year end
      • Demonstrated competence with Microsoft office suite of products with minimum intermediate level of Excel knowledge
      • Experience with SAP is an asset
