Reporting to the Director of Technology, the Sr. Cloud Architect is responsible for developing strategic, multi-cloud capabilities and crafting solutions for business and technology clients utilizing public cloud resources. Oxford has embraced a cloud-first strategy, and this role will be key to advancing our cloud maturity and enabling cloud transformation while supporting hybrid designs and mission-critical workloads hosted on premise. The Sr. Cloud Architect owns all architecture work vital to evolve the cloud technology landscape that supports our applications and business functions, following reference architecture frameworks to help drive cloud adoption, evolution and transformation.

As a member of this team, you will be responsible for:

  • Architect foundational capabilities of a hybrid, multi-cloud hosting environment built upon the following platforms: Microsoft Azure - hybrid IaaS and PaaS, Google Cloud Platform and Kubernetes, Amazon Web Services - native services and VMware Cloud on AWS

  • Crafting innovative solutions using native cloud resources, translating business requirements and use cases defined through the Intake process into dynamic infrastructure capabilities that evolve as business needs change and additional cloud services become available

  • Developing infrastructure-as-code and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to enable DevOps practices

  • Defining architecture models and reusable solution design patterns that enable rapid deployment of cloud services for diverse business entities

  • Owning architectural responsibilities for all assigned project work, including stakeholder management, architecture requirements, analysis, business case development, budgeting, solution design, implementation planning, and deployment

  • Collaborating with partners to gather functional and non-functional requirements for a specific project and facilitate trade-off discussions and resolution of conflicting requirements

  • Guiding, supporting and supervising the implementation of documented solution architectures into operational platforms by engineering and operations teams

  • Incorporating security requirements into the design, understanding and complying with OMERS security standards and policies

  • Providing direction and technical leadership in the adoption of new technologies

  • Developing and delivering strategic roadmaps to increase our cloud maturity, and provide expertise and governance as roadmaps are planned and executed

  • Participating in IT service management processes, including incident, problem and change management, and service request fulfillment

  • Participating in disaster recovery planning, design, implementation and testing activities

To succeed in this role, you have:

Formal Education and Certification
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field (computer science, information systems management, engineering)

  • Leading technology vendor certifications such as AWS, Google, Microsoft or VMware

Knowledge and Experience
  • 3+ years of experience as a cloud architect or comparable role, demonstrating applied architectural experience in implementing cloud-based technology solutions

  • 5+ years prior experience in a senior solution architect role, demonstrating the technical design and practical implementation of complex infrastructure solutions in an enterprise environment; financial sector experience is an asset

  • 8+ years of experience with the design and implementation of a broad range of infrastructure solutions - compute & storage platforms, high availability and disaster recovery design, n-tier infrastructure, database platforms and security integration

  • Experience with strategic technology planning, technology project prioritization and implementation at an enterprise level

  • Extensive experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment

  • Experience with the design and implementation of both enterprise and departmental solutions

  • Experience with technology product evaluation, selection, acquisition and deployment processes

  • Experience with calculating the total cost of ownership of an infrastructure solution

  • Experience with the preparation of technical design, implementation, system administration and operational documentation

Skills
  • A comprehensive understanding of the concepts, tools and best practices regarding the design and integration of multi-tiered, highly available, scalable infrastructure environments

  • Expertise in Azure, GCP and AWS cloud IaaS and PaaS design, implementation and support, including connectivity, security, networking and disaster recovery

  • Hands on experience with all Azure IaaS constructs (resource groups, VMs, VNETs, blob storage etc.), and Azure data services such as Azure SQL, Data Lake, Data Factory and Databricks

  • Hands on experience with infrastructure automation and coding - Terraform, Bash/PowerShell scripting, Python, Ansible, Puppet, GCP deployment manager, Azure ARM templates, version control (GitHub, GitLab)

  • Advanced knowledge of containerization and microservices (Kubernetes, Docker, AKS, GKE)

  • In-depth knowledge of interoperability between network, storage and server infrastructure, operational tools, and IT service management processes

  • Advanced knowledge of industry best practices, leading vendor architectures and technologies in related areas

  • A deep understanding of every aspect of the solution development and delivery life cycle, as well as governance and operational practices
