Senior Principal, Portfolio Management Team - Private Capital (Diversified Industrials)The opportunity

Exciting opportunity to join a collaborative team of private equity investors with a proven track record of top-quartile performance. This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading Canadian Portfolio Management Team (PMT) which sits within our $42 Billion Equities division.  You will create significant value across our global portfolio of 60+ companies, and is a highly valued partner to deal teams, management teams, and Ontario Teachers’ leadership.

As a leading pension plan, we strongly believe in the value the Portfolio Management Team brings.   This team has recently refreshed their global strategy and set a high aspiration for the contribution they can make to Teachers’ and our portfolio companies.  As a result, the Equities division is embarking on a significant investment to expand and strengthen this group in 2020 and beyond. 

In this position you will play a meaningful role working collaboratively with deal teams across the lifecycle of our investments, from diligence through exit.   You will engage with deal teams evaluating new opportunities, support Strategy and Value Creation Plans (VCPs) for our direct investments, accelerate specific value levers through special projects, and ensure we have the right talent in the right roles to successfully execute. You will be capable of working across several industries and comfortable identifying opportunities and leading work across multiple functional areas.

Who you’ll work with

You will work in a dynamic, fast paced, creative environment with PMT colleagues, deal team investment professionals, CEOs, their management teams and external advisors. You will also work with the Board of Directors of investments you support.

On certain projects you will manage external consulting teams and individual consultants. You may also work with our Value Creation & Analytics within the Infrastructure & Natural Resources platform on initiatives that straddle all Private Investments. In all instances, you will have the opportunity to work with talented and hardworking experienced individuals who you will learn from and grow your capability set.

You will report directly to the Managing Director, PMT.

What you’ll do

You will have several responsibilities working with our portfolio companies including:

  • Partnering directly with the Global Sector MDs for your designated Sector

  • Building strong relationships with the Global Sector teams so that you are seen as a true partner and extension of their team.

  • Supporting your Sector deal teams on due diligence for new potential investments.

  • Leading the onboarding and development of the Value Creation Plan (VCP) for new and existing investments. VCP development includes identifying the ~5 initiatives that will drive value during our investment horizon as well as developing the detailed KPIs and mobilization plans to ensure successful execution.

  • Leading specific projects with portfolio company executives in your Sector to drive incremental value

  • Scoping and overseeing work done by 3rd party advisors in portfolio companies within your Sector

  • Assessing talent within the portfolio company and ensuing the right organizational structure and talent in key value creating and value enabling roles to execute the VCP

  • Being an active leader and role model within the PMT and broader Equities team, supporting offsites, CXO conferences, and junior training and development

Key Deliverables in the first 12 - 24 months

Over the next two years in this role, the Senior Principal, PMT, will have delivered on the following:

  • Become a valued thought partner to Global Sector teams, CEOs, their management teams and board members

  • Created repeatable demand for themselves and the PMT from deal teams and portfolio company management teams

  • Successfully supported diligence on all new investments for their sectors

  • Ensured all new investments were successfully onboarded, required governance elements and VCPs were put in place

  • Created value directly attributable to his/her contribution on a number of companies and initiatives

  • Played a leadership role in developing our junior talent

What you’ll need
  • You have a minimum of 8 - 10 years of progressive and relevant experience including the following:

  • Undergraduate degree and MBA or other graduate degree

  • Attained the level of Principal or Associate Principal/Partner at a management consulting firm

  • ~5-10 years of post-consulting experience within an operating company, with P&L or General Management responsibilities, or experience in a similar private equity operations role

  • Strategic problem solver with practical bias to drive impact

  • Proven ability to influence and build consensus across multiple partners with high EQ

  • Experience and success in developing highly skilled teams

  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to the United States
