As part of the Compensation group, the Manager, Compensation plays a pivotal role in the design, development and management of the compensation programs by supporting internal partners on numerous compensation challenges across various levels. This role supports the Compensation group and the HR function in guiding partners to arrive at accurate strategic and compensation decisions. The role also plays an important role in the compensation decision process.
Field Support for the Corporate Functions
Partner with Human Resources Managers and management to keep abreast with organizational changes and to support the field on all compensation-related strategies to attract, retain and support talent within the Corporate functions of CN.
Support Corporate functions on all compensation-related matters for Canada and the U.S., and provide guidance on the following topics:
Compensation recommendations for external hire and appointments;
International and cross-border cases (in collaboration with the relocation group);
Systemic issues and complex cases, etc.
Job Evaluation / Ongoing Compensation Projects
Responsible for the job evaluation process and oversee the grading of all management jobs across the system (corporate and operations).
Oversee the maintenance of the grade structure system and the job evaluation process.
Support partners in the preparation, review and evaluation of jobs to ensure understanding and appropriate actions.
Provide direct assistance for the upcoming pay equity project.
Compensation Benchmarks / Surveys, Compensation Budget and Annual Salary Review
Oversee the participation to general and market specific compensation surveys to ensure proper alignment with market practice and trends.
Perform annual benchmarking and compression reviews to support the annual compensation budget.
Closely interacts with external providers to ensure data accuracy and relevance.
Provide direct support in the preparation of the annual compensation budget.
Partner with Human Resources Managers during the compensation cycle to ensure sound and transparent annual salary review, in line with business needs and interests.
Annual Proxy and Analytical Support
Responsible for performing various compensation related analysis and establishing appropriate dashboards to support effective compensation-related decisions.
Perform various compensation data mining analyses and provide interpretation and results and trends to senior management.
Key player in the annual proxy circular preparation and responsible for the preparation / compiling of all necessary compensation-related information.
Provide direct support and peer-review assistance on proxy-related matters.
Undergraduate studies in Commerce, Finance, Mathematics or related field combined with a minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience in compensation management.
Strong analytical and communication skills and solid understanding of all compensation plans and related compensation fields.
Capacity to explain specialized / complex technical compensation questions. Diligent attention to detail, project management and ability to interact with partners at different levels.
Good understanding of employment legislation.
