Job Summary

The Safety Officer, under the direction of the Director of Safety, will primarily be responsible to ensure compliance with relevant employment and occupational health and safety legislation. This position will stay abreast on compliance requirements and industry best practices; recommend changes or modifications to existing policies; and programs to remain in compliance and adopt best practices where feasible. This role will work remotely in the GTA and surrounding area.

Job Duties

  • Ensure compliance with relevant employment and occupational health and safety legislation
  • Advise employees and managers on the interpretation of health and safety policies and procedures
  • Travelling to job sites to perform inspections, incident follow up, and ensure staff are performing tasks safely.
  • Assisting human resources in drafting memoranda, correspondence, policies, reports, proposals, and other employment documentation that pertains to health and safety Implement employee/personnel programs, including health and safety programs
  • Complete new hire road tests
  • Stay up-to-date on compliance requirements and industry best practices; recommend changes or modifications to existing policies and programs to remain in compliance; and adopt best practices where feasible
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills
  • Monitor health and safety related documentation to ensure accuracy, consistency, and relevance to business processes
  • Other duties as assigned

Work Conditions

  • On call 24 hrs/day
  • Interaction with others under varying circumstances-including situations of a highly sensitive nature
  • Working in multiple locations with frequent interruptions
  • Interaction with employees, management, clients, and the public at large

  • Minimum 3 years experience in a similar role
  • Background as a Driver and/or in the bulk material transportation industry is a definite asset.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation
  • Valid G license; Valid AZ is an asset
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to interpret, develop, and implement health and safety policies and procedures
  • Ability to prioritize and manage conflicting demands
  • Ability to work individually as well as part of a team
  • High flexibility with strong interpersonal skills and professionalism that allow one to work effectively in a diverse environment
  • High level of integrity and work ethic
