Mission Statement: Homes First Society develops and provides affordable, stable housing and support services to break the cycle of homelessness for people with the fewest housing options.

  • Salary is $49,860.46 - $53,184.49 annually for 37.5 - 40 hours weekly.
  • Pension of between 6.1% - 7.1% from employer contributions.
  • Paid time off – including: 5 days personal leave, 15 days sick leave, 10 days’ vacation in the first year which increases to 15 days in the second year, and increases continually every year up to a maximum of 34 days.
  • Room for professional growth in the organization which is the largest provider of homeless shelters in Toronto.

Maintenance Workers perform corrective and preventive maintenance on the Agency’s buildings, maintain a safe and healthy work environment, prepare vacant units for occupancy and adhere to the mission statement and policies and procedures of Homes First Society.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Perform maintenance and repairs in the areas of electrical, plumbing, carpentry and general maintenance.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and interact positively with tenant populations who have experienced homelessness, mental health and addiction problems.
  • Maintain inventory and take care of tools and equipment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle throughout employment.
  • Must be able to lift 25 kilograms.
  • Knowledge of group processes and dynamics
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and team work skills; ability to maintain co-operative working relationships with Shelter and Housing co-workers and interact positively with the tenant population who have experienced homelessness, mental health and aliiction problems
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management, and administration skills
  • Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet and database software applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, in languages other than English an asset

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Grade 12 education.
  • At least 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Good communication and organization skills.
  • Working knowledge of building management/maintenance routines, Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code and able to ensure that Occupational Health and Safety, WHMIS and other relevant standards and legal requirements are met.
  • Several years’ experience working with people who are homeless, under-housed and who are hard to house
  • Knowledge of tenant population, diversity issues, anti-discrimination practices and systemic reasons for homelessness
  • Experience with rental legislation in Ontario
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, standards and guidelines
  • Knowledge of resources and services available in the community
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution and organization skills
  • Certificates in First Aid, CPR, Crisis Prevention and Intervention an asset
