Description

For the past 40 years, GIRO has established itself as a leader in the development of optimization software designed to improve productivity in the public transport and postal distribution industries.

Located in Montreal, GIRO has currently more than 500 full-time employees, mainly professionals in IT and operational research, serving over 325 public transportation and postal companies found in 27 countries (Montreal, New York, Los Angeles, Brussels, Barcelona, Sydney, Singapore, Paris, Hong Kong, etc.).

You are part of a documentation team, working with a team of developers to ensure the evolution and constant improvement of the documentation for a range of highly specialized software products. The Technical Writer uses their industry knowledge and their linguistic, analytical and communications skills to write the documentation that users of the applications rely on. In collaboration with the development team, the Technical Writer ensures that the functionalities of the applications are described appropriately in the online help and user guides. To fulfil their responsibilities, the Technical Writer makes sure to understand the applications and the context in which they are used so that they are able to describe how the applications function. They also keep their knowledge of recognized technical-writing standards up to date. The Technical Writer must be familiar with the software-development environment and the generic tools associated with technical documentation so that they can apply changes in the online help.

Main responsibilities

  • Write various documents in English associated with our software products (user guides, user interfaces, annual update notices and online help)
  • Collaborate with developers to write online help for applications that takes new developments into account
  • Ensure consistency of documentation among different functionalities and suggest necessary changes
  • Modify, maintain or rewrite segments of online help. May put these changes into production
  • Participate in designing windows and reports to ensure the ergonomics of the applications’ interface
  • May participate in functional reviews
  • Write an annual update notice describing new features
  • Incorporate new features into existing user guides
  • Write user guides for new products associated with the applications
  • Participate in defining presentation standards for guides and ensure to follow them
  • Take screenshots, do formatting and page layouts, and take part in publishing user guides
  • Research and advise on terminology to be used in presenting various concepts involved in the software applications
  • Participate in every stage of publishing user guides
  • Provide writing support to other teams

Work environment

Requested skills

  • University degree in technical writing (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience
  • Execllent English writing skills
  • Knowledge of French (spoken and written)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience in Adobe FrameMaker (asset)
  • Knowledge of the DITA methodology (asset)
  • Experience in the field of computing or public transportation (asset)
