Job Description

CPP Investments has an opening for a lawyer to support a broad range of enterprise legal matters, with a focus on general contracting, as well as technology and data related matters.  Reporting to a Director, Legal, the successful candidate will join a dynamic team of high-performing legal and compliance professionals who engage directly with senior leadership and business units to help them navigate, understand and comply with legal and regulatory requirements in a manner consistent with our Guiding Principles and our mandate to manage the funds of the Canada Pension Plan in the best interests of 20 million CPP contributors and beneficiaries.

Role-Specific Accountabilities

  • Working with the Director, Legal overseeing Technology & Data advice/support, provide advice across a broad range of technology and data-related matters, including information management, data use and governance, contracting, intellectual property, and training relating to policies and procedures and information sharing requirements (from an internal and external perspective)
  • Provide advice and assess legal risk in connection with commercial contracts, engagement letters and non-disclosure agreements; manage and enhance contractual templates and precedents, working closely and collaboratively with paralegal professionals and other lawyers in the Legal Department as well as oversight of external legal counsel
  • Working closely and collaboratively with other lawyers and paralegal professionals in CPP Investments’ highly respected Legal Department, provide advice, assess legal risk and deliver support across a broad range of matters, including human resources, enterprise risk, financial reporting, and litigation
  • Generally assist on other legal matters as they arise

Qualifications

  • LL.B./LL.M or JD required
  • 3-5 years of relevant legal experience in sophisticated corporate/commercial private practice at a major law firm or an in-house corporate legal department
  • Ability to build partnerships with key stakeholders to help implement enterprise Legal strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, think creatively, have a global mindset and be assertive
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to work cooperatively with many different stakeholders and ability to manage outside counsel
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Strong organizational skills; flexible, adaptable, and able to manage ambiguity and multiple projects
  • Motivated self-starter with ability to work independently with minimal supervision, but team player
  • Professional conduct reflecting the quality of work, ethical values and high standards of CPP Investments
