Enterprise Architecture plays a vital role within the BMO technology organization. Based on our enterprise reference architectures, we lead the development and implementation of innovative, secure and cost-effective information technology target architectures, feeding into multi-year investment plans, solutions and operational environments that support and enable BMO lines of business to meet their defined strategies. This includes: 

  • Timely creation of Reference and Target Architectures, describing capabilities needed for BMO Engineering solutions, delivered in advance of solution implementation 

  • Definition of security capabilities to be incorporated into Targets, Solutions, and Patterns, to drive a “baked-in” security mindset for solution design and engineering teams and safeguard our environments, data, intellectual property, and operations within BMO’s risk appetite. 

  • Definition of operational capabilities, including security operations, to be included in the solutions to meet the business requirements of availability performance, and information security risk management. 

  • Define the principles, standards, patterns and guidelines regarding the proper use and deployment of technology within the Enterprise 

The Infrastructure Security Architect contributes to creating the strategic enterprise architecture for the bank, with a specific focus on security specific target architectures and capabilities for implementation into BMO’s infrastructure designs.  The Infrastructure Security Architect defines the principles, standards, patterns and guidelines regarding the proper use and deployment of technology within the Enterprise, creates the policies, processes, and procedures around technology governance by assessing the appropriate evolution of architecture in both a business and a technology context, and advises the business regarding the use of technology in providing overall value to the Enterprise.  This includes performing the required research to understand both the current state of the financial industry and threat landscape to define immediate needs and looking forward to emerging threats to identify the appropriate, modern, cloud-native capabilities to add to our architectures to mitigate those threats. 


As an Infrastructure Security Architect, here’s what you will do: 

  • Lead the definition and development of architecture, patterns and guidelines for security to accelerate cloud adoption (AWS and Azure) and modernize on-premise infrastructure 

  • Provide leadership in technical guidance and counsel to Development, Engineering and Operation teams to ensure that their processes and deliverables align with the Architecture of the Enterprise 

  • Define the security controls for a variety of cloud and on-premise workloads, by closely working with Information Security. 

  • Research, identify, document, and socialize (via formal governance and through ad hoc meetings) security capabilities to be built into both security specific target architectures and broader target architectures to protect BMO’s networks, systems, and data 

  • Be accountable for developing the roadmap to implement secure capabilities by working with application owners and other architects. 

  • Partner with our Information Security (IS) team to ensure alignment between Enterprise Architecture and IS on the infrastructure security capabilities needed to maintain BMO’s security posture 

  • Work across EA teams to ensure security capabilities are understood and consumed in application and data focused target infrastructures  

  • Contribute to the definition and implementation of technology governance activities (e.g., reference architecture, standards and guidelines) to ensure that project teams adhere to industry best practices and standards 

  • Identify and define new processes and/or process improvement opportunities to integrate security capabilities into BMO engineering and application designs 

  • Research and monitor industry trends and technologies to recommends technology direction. Provide leadership to project teams to capitalize on these technology opportunities. Evaluate and recommend emerging technology capabilities to further enhance BMO’s security posture.  

  • Research emerging technologies and attend relevant professional courses/conferences to maintain currency of skill set 

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with peers across the T&O organization. 


What makes you a great fit? 

  • You have a university degree (BA) or higher in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline 

  • 10+ years of work experience in IT or business environment focused on the security of information systems 

  • Experience in guiding cloud adoption with appropriate security, understanding both the opportunities and challenges. You take a balanced approach to risk based on the requirements of the data or system in question 

  • Knowledge of IT security management practices obtained through formal training and/or work experience. 

  • Advanced knowledge of the business of a large Enterprise, the financial services industry, as well as development and/or IT Operation specialties  

  • Deep knowledge of all aspects of technology and of architecture concepts and practices; capable of driving from strategy to architecture to design & implementation as needed 

  • You have a good understanding of functional aspects and technical behavior of the foundational technologies supporting BMO’s banking systems systems operating systems, networks, security, compute, storage, and cloud 

  • Deep knowledge of architecture frameworks, methodologies, and tools (e.g., The Open Group Architecture Framework [TOGAF], Zachman Framework)  

  • CISSP or equivalent required, industry certifications on Cloud (AWS, Azure, M365) and Agile Development are ideal

  • Relevant IT infrastructure & platform knowledge in one or more of the following domains: 

  • Networking - TCP/IP, UDP, routers, switches, firewalls, ports & protocols, Quality of Service (QoS) 

  • Distributed/server - security capabilities and best practices for hardening Windows and Linux platforms 

  • Workplace Technology - security capabilities and best practices to secure Windows and Apple devices, including UBA/UBEA capabilities 

  • Unified Communications and Collaboration - knowledge of security capabilities and best practices to manage real time communications using tools such as Microsoft Teams, and to manage collaboration and file sharing using SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Teams Channels  

  • Data security - knowledge of security capabilities and best practices to secure data within on-premise systems and in the cloud 

  • Growth mind-set and positive attitude towards fast-evolving technologies and their security. 

  • Innate curiosity, high energy, and problem-solving ability 

  • Willingness and ability to build relationships with members of other teams to ensure effective collaboration and architectural designs that can be implemented within BMO 

  • Advanced communication skills, both written and oral, able to influence application owners along the cloud journey and guide the developers with appropriate guardrails 

  • Strong influencing skills to sell the architectural ideas to business partners 

  • Demonstrates advanced consulting and client management skills  

  • Solid relationship and managerial leadership abilities

  • Knowledgeable and experienced with: 

  • Technology and solution design and configuration 

  • Identify and access management design and implementation (OIDC, OAuth2, AD) 

  • PKI, key management and encryption architectures and solutions 

  • Cloud security - Azure, AWS, and M365 in particular 

  • Security posture diagnosis, threat analysis and remediation design 

  • Impact of security decisions to infrastructure components and operations 

  • Functional and technical behavior of network protocols 

  • Virtualization, server design, administration and troubleshooting. 

  • DevOps and Agile deployment concepts
