Marking the anniversary of Canadian Confederation and the establishment of Canada as united country, it&rsquo;s a day dedicated to celebrating the richness and diversity of Canadian culture. There are many activities and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/what-to-see-and-do-on-canada-day-2024-1.7246405\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">celebrations<\/a> across the country, including public events, fireworks and concerts. La voici.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is July 1<\/strong><strong><sup>st<\/sup><\/strong><strong> A Holiday?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada Day is a <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/2024-statutory-holidays-in-ontario-the-complete-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statutory holiday in Ontario<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/en\/2024-statutory-holidays-in-quebec-the-complete-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quebec<\/a>, and every province and territory in Canada. A statutory holiday is created through legislation from federal, territorial or provincial governments. On these designated days, many employees are legally entitled to a paid day off from work or increased compensation for working. Government employees and many workers for private companies will have the day off.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other 2024 statutory holidays include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>January 1 \u2013 Monday: New Year\u2019s Day &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>February 19 \u2013 Monday: Family Day &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>March 29 \u2013 Friday: Good Friday &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>May 20 \u2013 Monday: Victoria Day &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>July 1 \u2013 Monday: Canada Day &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>September 2 \u2013 Monday: Labour Day &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>October 14 \u2013 Monday: Thanksgiving &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>December 25 \u2013 Wednesday: Christmas Day &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>December 26 \u2013 Thursday: Boxing Day&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What If You\u2019re Working on Canada Day?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As public holiday, some privately-owned businesses can still require employees to work on Canada Day and other statutory holidays. For example, on July 1<sup>st<\/sup> it is not uncommon to find servers working at bars and restaurants. However, employees working on Canada Day must be compensated at a premium rate by their employers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 2024 statutory holidays, employees are entitled to their regular pay plus an additional 50% by law. For example, an employee who earns the current <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/the-2024-minimum-wage-in-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ontario minimum wage<\/a> of $16.55 an hour on a regular day will earn $24.82 ($16.55+$8.27) per hour for working on a 2024 statutory holiday. Another option that is legally available to employers to offer employees additional paid time off on regular working days in exchange for working on a stat holiday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PLEASE NOTE<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that employers and employees should always discuss statutory holidays and vacation arrangements beforehand. Employees should give employers advance notice of days they will be taking off, and employers should have a publicly available calendar listing all confirmed days off.
