Effective June 1st, the minimum wage in British Columbia is $17.40 per hour<\/a>. This is a $0.65 total raise, and a 3.8% increase of the minimum wage from $16.75 per hour in 2023<\/a>. BC now offers the highest 2024 minimum wage<\/a> of any province in Canada \u2013 with only the Yukon and Nunavut territories offering a higher rate. British Columbia is now the fourth province or territory in Canada to offer a minimum wage of $17.00 or higher.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average hourly salary in British Columbia was $34.68 as of the end of last year. This means that one hour of minimum wage earnings is equal to 50.17% of the average hourly wage in British Columbia. It should be noted that the average hourly salary in specific industries and job sectors can vary wildly across the province. At the new BC 2024 minimum wage of $17.40 per hour, a person working 37.5 hours per week will earn approximately $33,930 before taxes over a 12-month period.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A living wage is defined as the actual hourly wage<\/a> or salary required for workers to meet the costs of living in specific areas and communities. While rural areas typically offer a lower living wage, cities will almost always have a higher living wage due to increased costs of living, i.e. rent. A recent report has found a range of living wages<\/a> across British Columbia, from $25.68 per hour in Metro-Vancouver \u2014 the provincial capital \u2014 to $20.64 per hour in Dawson Creek in the provincial interior. The new 2024 minimum wage rate in BC is below the living wage in all areas of the province listed in the survey.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consumer price index<\/a> (CPI) is a commonly used method to track the effects of inflation and related which contribute to price changes for consumers. The BC provincial government has pledged<\/a> to tie future minimum wage increases to the rising CPI. The CPI in British Columbia rose by 2.9% from April 2023 to April 2024<\/a>, while the rate of inflation itself increased 3.9%<\/a>. The 2024 minimum wage increase is a result of these changes. While these figures are not as dramatic as during the peak years of the pandemic, both the CPI and inflation have remained high. As a result, workers in BC are already paying increased costs not accounted for by the minimum wage increase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
