In 2022, the highest increase in the average annual salary occurred in Nunavut, with a 7.2% raise. New Brunswick, which historically has a lower average annual salary, experienced the second largest increase at 6.2%. The provinces of Quebec and Nova Scotia experienced similar increases of 4.4% and 4.2%, respectively. While this is certainly good news, the reality is that with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/canada-inflation-1.6653163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high rate of inflation<\/a>, workers in almost every province experienced a net decrease in the value of their salary. Prince Edward Island and the Yukon, two areas that experienced the highest salary growth in 2021, now found themselves with some of the lowest salary increases in the country. There are certain industries which have experienced far more salary growth than others this year, compared to others which have only had marginal increases. By knowing the job sectors and industries experiencing the high level of annual average salary growth, job seekers will know where their skills will be valued and <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/rewarding-employee-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rewarded<\/a> in <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/how-to-measure-and-mitigate-employee-turnover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the long term<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Finance and Insurance \u2013 +18.0%&nbsp;<\/li><li>Forestry and Logging \u2013 +9.5%&nbsp;<\/li><li>Retail \u2013 +6.3%&nbsp;<\/li><li>Professional, Scientific and Technical Services \u2013 +6.2%&nbsp;<\/li><li>Construction \u2013 +6.1%&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Only one industry in Canada has experienced average annual salary growth of more than 10%, compared to three sectors in 2021. Except for two sectors \u2014 Finance and Insurance at 18% and Forestry and Logging at 9.5% \u2014 all job sectors experienced growth of less than 6.5%.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Finance and Forestry industries have experience high growth in years past, the fact that <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/10-questions-to-ask-in-a-retail-job-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Retail sector<\/a> has experienced the third highest level of average annual salary growth, which can be seen as a result of the lifting of pandemic-mandates throughout the country early in the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than Retail, all the job sectors with the highest average annual salary growth in 2022 require <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/the-most-wanted-technical-skills-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">specialized skills<\/a> and knowledge. This highlights the impact that <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/encourage-learning-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learning job-related skill sets<\/a> and meeting specific requirements can have for those looking for a financially rewarding career.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Canadian Industries Where the Average Annual Salary Has Declined<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the average Canadian salary in 2022 has increased, this is not the case in all sectors. There are five job sectors that have experienced a decrease in the average annual salary over the course of this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Administrative and Support \u2013 -1.1%&nbsp;<\/li><li>Real Estate (Rental\/Leasing) \u2013 -1.1%&nbsp;<\/li><li>Information and Culture Industries \u2013 -2.2%&nbsp;<\/li><li>Education \u2013 -3.6%&nbsp;<\/li><li>Management of Companies and Enterprises \u2013 -6.1%&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the biggest surprise is that those working in the Real Estate industry have experienced a salary decrease of \u20131.1%. Employees in this sector have previously been in the top five for salary increases. This is a strong sign that the Canadian real estate market is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/business\/2022\/12\/19\/house-price-declines-accelerate-in-november-as-a-prosperous-period-for-real-estate-ends.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hitting a rough patch<\/a>, causing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogto.com\/real-estate-toronto\/2022\/10\/more-young-people-canada-giving-up-dream-buying-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">headaches for everyone involved<\/a>. It is still too soon to tell if this will lead to the <a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/real-estate\/has-the-canadian-housing-bubble-burst-that-could-depend-on-time-and-place\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-feared burst<\/a> of the Canadian real estate bubble.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sector with the biggest decline in the average annual salary is Management of Companies and Entreprises at \u20136.1%. While this is a considerable number, it should be noted that the salary for this sector is $77,670.84 per year. This is exemplified by the fact that the Mining, Oil and Gas Extraction and Utilities sectors are the only ones with an average annual salary of more than $100,000 in 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Professional, Scientific and Technical Services sector and Information and Culture Industries sector continue to offer high average annual salaries after continued growth in the past 2 years.
