{"id":14217,"date":"2021-06-16T11:47:48","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T15:47:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jobillico.com\/blog\/?p=14217"},"modified":"2021-06-16T11:47:49","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T15:47:49","slug":"bc-is-funding-3000-new-jobs-for-underrepresented-people-in-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jobillico.com\/blog\/en\/bc-is-funding-3000-new-jobs-for-underrepresented-people-in-tech\/","title":{"rendered":"BC Is Funding 3000 New Jobs For Underrepresented People In Tech"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>British Columbia has made a new commitment to spend $15 million to fund employment opportunities for underrepresented people in the province&rsquo;s growing technology sector.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British Columbia provincial government has <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2021JERI0040-001119\">announced a new initiative<\/a> designed to increase inclusion and diversity within the BC technology sector. This will happen through $15 million in funding to the Innovator Skills Initiative (ISI), which will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbusiness.ca\/BC-invests-15-million-to-help-fund-tech-sector-employment-for-underrepresented-groups\">supplement the salary of 3000 new job<\/a> roles in the tech sector, with $5000 allocated for each applicant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ISI is administered by <a href=\"https:\/\/innovatebc.ca\/what-we-offer\/\">InnovateBC<\/a>, and is also working in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/covid-19\/economic-recovery\/youth\">StrongerBC Future Leaders<\/a> program. This program is designed to provide job opportunities, training and education for young professionals in British Columbia from ages 18 to 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cToo many well-deserving women, gender-diverse people, Indigenous, Black and people of colour, and other marginalized communities have struggled to enter the growing technology sector and this needs to change.\u201d<\/p><cite>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2021JERI0040-001119\">Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tech-sector-in-bc\"><strong>Tech Sector In BC<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The tech industry in British Columbia has grown into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2014-05-22\/vancouver-welcomes-tech-companies-hampered-by-u-dot-s-dot-work-visa-caps\">a true global power<\/a>. British Columbia is currently home to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouvereconomic.com\/focus\/technology\/\">10,000 tech companies<\/a> that employ more than 100,000 people and generate over $23 billion in annual revenue, with these numbers predicted to increase. The BC tech sector grew by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbusiness.ca\/BC-tech-sector-earns-high-marks-in-its-latest-report-card-but-theres-still-work-to-do-at-home-and-abroadhttps:\/\/www.bcbusiness.ca\/BC-tech-sector-earns-high-marks-in-its-latest-report-card-but-theres-still-work-to-do-at-home-and-abroad\">70% from 2003-2018<\/a> and the only industry to exceed this rate of growth in the province was construction. In fact, Vancouver, BC was named <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/vancouver-high-tech-software-job-growth\">the number one location<\/a> in all of North America for growth in high-tech software jobs. Even in the face of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, the BC tech sector has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbusiness.ca\/Struck-by-the-pandemic-BC-tech-companies-keep-hiring\">continued to expand<\/a> both in terms of hiring and financial investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-canadian-tech-sector-is-on-the-rise\"><strong>The Canadian Tech Sector Is On The Rise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian tech sector is one of the country&rsquo;s fastest growing, with jobs found across the country in <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/how-to-get-a-job-in-vancouver\/\">Vancouver<\/a>, <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/how-to-get-a-job-in-toronto\/\">Toronto<\/a>, <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/how-to-get-a-job-in-montreal\/\">Montreal<\/a>, <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/how-to-get-a-job-in-calgary\/\">Calgary<\/a> and places in between. As businesses look ahead to the slow and safe economic reopening after the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, it has been noted that the tech sector is likely to be one of the leading parts of the Canadian economy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bdc.ca\/globalassets\/digizuite\/28336-st-outlookmfg-e2010-2.pdf?utm_campaign=Tech-Industry-Outlook-2020--download--EN&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Eloqua#:~:text=Technology%20industry%20outlook,-How%20changes%20in&amp;text=Our%20scenario%20forecasts%20that%20the,a%20cumulative%2017.4%25%20by%202025.\">A study from January 2021<\/a> highlights certain factors that show the Canadian tech sector is poised to experience rapid growth over several years:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>55% of companies plan to continue working remotely beyond 2021<\/li><li>97% of workers were able to retain their jobs during the pandemic<\/li><li>34% job growth over the past nine years, triple that of other Canadian industries<\/li><li>17.4% growth in annual output is predicted by 2025<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For all its economic success, the Canadian tech sector does have issues related to <a href=\"https:\/\/dmz.ryerson.ca\/the-review\/the-ugly-truth-about-how-underrepresentation-is-hurting-tech\/\">a lack of diversity<\/a> among its workers. <a href=\"https:\/\/brookfieldinstitute.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/FINAL-Tech-Workers-ONLINE.pdf\">A 2016 study by the Brookfield Institute<\/a> lays out some stark findings, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cThere are significant barriers faced by certain demographic groups\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cMen are four times more likely than women to be in a tech job\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cThere is also a significant pay gap for most visible minority groups\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are very serious issues that the Canadian tech sector must address in order to successfully build a better and more inclusive industry. A diverse and inclusive workspace is not only the right thing to do, it is also good for business, with multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/diversity-wins-how-inclusion-matters\">studies<\/a> highlighting the fact that <a href=\"\/blog\/en\/diversity-in-business-understanding-and-acting-better\/\">diverse workplaces<\/a> are more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesaffaires.com\/dossier\/diversite-en-emploi\/les-6-cles-de-la-diversite-en-entreprise\/605273\">innovative<\/a>, effective and ultimately successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learn-more-and-how-to-apply\"><strong>Learn More and How To Apply<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the BC provincial government, applications for the Innovator Skills Initiative are expected to open in the summer of 2021, with a goal of work placements beginning in the fall.
