About the role

Internal Audit contributes to Sun Life’s success by creating value through partnership, advisory and objective assurance. This role reports to the AVP, Internal Audit leading the Professional Practices Group for Internal Audit globally. The incumbent is a risk and actuarial subject matter expert that is responsible for guiding the North American actuarial audit team on actuarial matters and the global audit team on consistent risk-based guidance and approaches where relevant. The Director, Internal Audit Actuarial and Risk is an individual contributor role that will be supported in their mandate by various team members from time to time across the global audit team.

What you'll be doing

Actuarial Focus

  • Provide subject matter expertise on actuarial matters in North America, supporting the audit teams in completing their risk assessments and audits.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and informing the approach to assessing risk and executing on thematic actuarial audits across the global audit teams to ensure consistency in approach where appropriate.
  • Provide expertise and leadership in discussions of risk assessment and audit findings with the clients in the business as appropriate for actuarial reviews.
  • Support the continuous improvement of the audit teams’ understanding of actuarial concepts and the risks inherent in insurance products through training efforts.
  • Monitor results for all actuarial processes selected for continuous audit/continuous monitoring.
  • Participate in audits as required for North America actuarial processes.
  • Actively participate in meetings with clients to help support a common understanding of risks inherent in the business process being audited as well as support clear communication of any recommendations for control improvement resulting from audit work.

Risk Focus

  • Lead the approach to dynamic risk assessment through participation in global risk discussions and issue management that can be translated to audit implications and considered by the audit teams in a pro-active way.
  • Collaborate across Internal Audit on risk topics and audit approaches.
  • Provide guidance and challenge on risk related aspects of audit methodology and thematic reviews.
  • Increase risk awareness across the department to help guide consistent risk-based audit work.
  • Maintain a risk repository that supports on demand risk data to inform audit work.
  • Take on a leadership role in contribution of teams’ continuous improvement and performance and reinforce internal audit purpose and risk assessment best practices.
  • Deliver on the role of the department’s Operational Risk Officer (ORO) and Business Unit Compliance Officer (BUCO).

General

  • Develop and leverage relationships with key leaders, including the first- and second-line leaders relevant to the mandate.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills by staying current with developments in audit practice and the insurance industry.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Professional actuarial designation
  • 7+ years of experience in risk management and actuarial processes with a focus on building and leveraging relationships within and outside of your direct team.
  • Strong understanding of the elements of risk management and controls. In addition, strong understanding of the actuarial processes (e.g., Valuation, Pricing, ALM, Capital, or Second Line Oversight) and tools (e.g., AXIS, Pathwise, etc.)
  • Strong critical thinking skills to enable risk and control assessment and issue identification. Also creativity to adjust traditional approaches and tools, and willingness to challenge the status quo.
  • Resilient and agile with the ability to manage conflict with the capacity to handle multiple complex deliverables simultaneously, and to prioritize work efforts.
  • Strong personal and interpersonal skills - ability to manage diverse relationships across the organization, while effectively communicating complex issues and decisions, and remain open, receptive, and influence effectively.
  • Strategic thinking, analysis, and interpretation skills - able to see and share the big picture.
  • Change Management Skills - Comfortable in leading change, driving the implementation of effective practices, and helping others to make or adjust to change.
  • Internal audit or risk management experience
  • Experience in presenting to large groups and senior management.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
