Tahltan Cultural and Language Assistant Dease Lake School

Dease Lake School is now accepting applications for the position of Tahltan Language and Cultural Assistant. This is a continuing position and is for 35 hours per week. The rate of pay is $35.11 per hour. Terms and conditions of employment are governed by C.U.P.E. (local 3234) collective agreement.

The Tahltan Language and Cultural Assistant will:

Provide academic guidance, assistance and direction to Indigenous students as needed.

Liaise between home, school and parent/guardian through visitations and consultations.

Monitor student academic and social development as well as attendance.

Provide tutoring and classroom support as needed.

Assist teaching staff with assessing progress, planning interventions, enrichment, etc.

Promote awareness, comprehension and fluency of an Indigenous language and culture.

Integrate Indigenous cultural activities and Indigenous language instruction.

Assist teachers in developing, preparing, presenting and integrating Indigenous language/cultural activities into the regular curriculum.

Develop, prepare and presents appropriate materials in Indigenous language classes.

Organize and participate in cultural activities on the land.

To increase the sense of belonging, identity, and self-esteem in a caring and inclusive environment for all Indigenous learners.

To improve the physical well-being of Indigenous learners

Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information seen or heard.

Maintain familiarity with Workers Compensation Board (WCB) safety procedures.

Provide a positive role model for all students.

Maintain flexible hours, if needed, to run before school or after school programs to meet the goals of this program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Secondary school graduation preferred, supplemented by training in language education.

Valid class 5 BC driver's license.

Fluency in local Indigenous language(s).

Knowledgeable about local Indigenous heritage and culture.

Ability to work effectively in diverse classroom settings.

Previous related experience in working with students in a language or transitional ESL setting is preferred.

Work cooperatively with the school and the community in order to ensure a common direction as outlined in the Indigenous Enhancement Agreement.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
