Job Description

Core Function The Nutritionist evaluates the nutritional status of individuals and provides nutrition counselling and consulting to health professionals, dietetic interns, community groups, and individuals. The Nutritionist plans, evaluates and conducts nutrition education programs and develops educational materials for various audiences. At the Clinic, the Nutritionist practices both on an individual basis and participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Qualifications • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, Food or Nutritional Sciences • Completion of an accredited Dietetic Internship or a Master’s Degree with approved competencies • Membership in the Saskatchewan Dietitians Association • Membership in the Dietitians of Canada • Valid Driver’s Licence and a vehicle available for work • First Aid Certification (asset) • CPR Certification (asset) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Intermediate computer skills • Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational and interpersonal skills • Ability to work independently and be a team player • Demonstrated understanding of human behaviour to provide nutritional counselling to individuals and groups • Sensitivity and knowledge of socioeconomic and cross cultural issues in diet and nutrition • Knowledge of community resources Experience • Previous work experience in community nutrition or public health (preferred) Conditions of Work The Nutritionist works in a clinical office environment. Hours of work include regular office hours within the Clinic’s regular hours of operation plus occasional after-hours and evening programs. Key Performance Areas A. Commitment to the Organization 1. Team Work Function as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team Take initiative and demonstrate independence as part of the team Serve on committees 5. Attendance and Punctuality Be on-time, prepared and ready for work and meetings Notify Supervisor in a timely manner of any unplanned absences from work to allow sufficient notice for arrangements to be made for back-up staff or scheduling changes as may be required Follow Association procedures and protocol re: timesheets, planned absences, vacation requests, etc. 6. Confidentiality Comply with the Association’s Confidentiality Policy Ensure the privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, client, staff and member information 7. Other Duties May participate in the interviewing process for new staff May be required to show others how to perform tasks or duties by familiarizing new employees with the work area and procedures Accept other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor or Executive Director B. Client Services 1. Diet Counselling Provide individual or group diet counselling, including preventative and therapeutic counselling Arrange regular follow-up as appropriate Participate in case conferences as required 2. Information and Resources Prepare and/or provide diet and nutrition related resources to patients and clients Review current scientific research and apply to counselling and programming Submit nutrition-related information and resources to Membership & Health Information Coordinator to provide to Clinic patients, clients, and members C. Community Programming 1. Programming Committee Serve on the Clinic Program Committee Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to plan, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate educational programs and events 2. Educational Programs and Events Develop and deliver nutrition programs to Clinic members and community groups Provide educational programs to Clinic staff 3. Education and Advocacy Act as a nutrition resource to the community and the multidisciplinary team at the Clinic Facilitate community initiatives to improve access to nutrition information Be a member of relevant community agencies and groups Advocate for clients to access healthy foods D. Administrative Duties 1. Charting Ensure ongoing maintenance of patient/client charts 2. Reports Collect and compile statistics on patient visits and demographics Provide month end statistical reports on department activities Prepare regular updates and reports to referring health care providers 3. Supplies and Related Resources Purchase appropriate resources and supplies as required 4. Department Management Assist in budget planning for the Nutrition Department Inform management of supply and resource requirements F. Professional Development 1. Professional Association Be a member in good standing with Saskatchewan Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada Participate in the Saskatchewan Dietitians Association Continuing Competence Program including perform an annual self assessment and develop a learning plan Practice in accordance with the Dietitians of Canada Professional Standards 2. Continuous Learning Attend relevant professional development seminars or events when convenient and as appropriate Share information from professional development events with colleagues Maintain First Aid and CPR certification (recommended but not required) Participate in and supervise research projects as appropriate Supervise Nutrition interns and students
