The Terrestrial Invasive Fauna Biologist reports to the Terrestrial Invasive Fauna Specialist within the Terrestrial Invasive Fauna Unit in the Conservation Science Section at the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS). The Terrestrial Invasive Fauna Unit is focused on mitigating the threat associated with terrestrial invasive fauna through science-informed policy, preventative actions, and development of best management practices.

The Terrestrial Invasive Fauna Biologist will work with an extensive network of partners including other ministries; local, provincial and federal governments; First Nations; academia; and non-government organizations. Specifically, this position is responsible for coordinating science advice on issues associated with terrestrial invasive fauna prevention and management to decision makers, regional biologists, qualified professionals and the public. The Terrestrial Invasive Fauna Biologist will support prioritizing provincial approaches to high risk terrestrial invasive fauna, developing and improving prevention strategies, advancing surveillance, coordinating rapid response to new incursions, and delivering community outreach for new and emerging priorities.

The Terrestrial Invasive Fauna Biologist will also develop and implement conservation, restoration and monitoring projects, and coordinate stewardship projects focusing on invasive animals and their non-native habitats, as well as urban, agricultural and/or forest/grassland/wetland settings in British Columbia.

Job Requirements

Education and Certification:

  • Master’s degree in a related science field (e.g. biological sciences, ecology, natural resources management or related discipline) AND three (3) years of related experience*; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related science field (e.g., biological sciences, ecology, natural resources management or related discipline) AND five (5) years of related experience*.
  • Registered (or eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment. Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a Professional Biologist (RP Bio) with the College of Applied Biology within 6 months of appointment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be confirmed. If you are not currently registered, advise how you have confirmed with the CAB that you are immediately eligible.


*Related experience must include:

  • Project design and management including budget management, data management and synthesis, and reporting.
  • Communicating complicated scientific concepts in a simple way to the general public and/or government executives, orally and in writing.
  • Working in a field-based environment.
  • Methodologies used to assess wildlife populations and habitat parameters and collecting, analyzing, and reporting biological data.

*Note: The above project elements need to be met, but not necessarily on the same project.

Preference may be given to applicants with 1 or more of the following:

  • Scientific knowledge and/or experience working with invasive species. Note: experience in only one taxonomic group should not preclude one from applying from this position.
  • Experience working with First Nations and Indigenous peoples.
  • Experience engaging, communicating, and partnering with stakeholders, universities, and NGO groups.


Provisos

  • Valid Class 5 B.C. driver’s license or equivalent.
  • Meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
  • May require the operation of a variety of equipment.
  • Travel may be required, particularly during the field season.
  • Conducts field work which may include the following: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • May require overnight or extended stay and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Able to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
