The FMC OR is the Adult Quaternary Level 1 Trauma Centre serving Southern Alberta and surrounding areas. Our OR includes 32 operating rooms and surgeries are performed 365 days per year. Our multidisciplinary team includes Surgeons, Anesthesia, Perioperative RNs, ORTs and support staff. We provide surgical interventions for over 22,000 patients yearly. FMC OR partners with the U of C to provide a teaching environment for medical and nursing students. We are proud to be the Calgary Zone Centre of Excellence for Trauma, Cardiac Open Heart, Neurological, Thoracic, Spine and Organ Transplant surgeries. We are a world leader in the development of the MRI OR Suite and Interventional Hybrid Trauma and Cardiac ORs. Other surgical specialties include Ortho/Arthroplasty, Gen Surgery, Pacemakers, Vascular Access, ENT, Plastics, and Gynecology. FMC cares for oncology patients spanning all services. The Perioperative Registered Nurse (OR Nurse) position is responsible for providing patient care using the Nursing Process, in accordance with CRNA (College of Registered Nurses of Alberta), ORNAC (Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada) and CSA (Canadian Standards Association) standards of practice. The OR Nurse will demonstrate competence in delivering safe, effective and efficient care in both a scrub and circulating role, as an integral part of their surgical team. The OR Nurse is responsible to provide safe care according to the Perioperative Nursing Care Plan, throughout the patient stay in the Surgical Suite. The OR Nurse promotes the professional role and evaluates their own professional education and clinical practice standards. The OR Nurse is a patient advocate and provides a link between the units and the Operating Room. The OR Nurse draws on a unique body of nursing knowledge.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $35.87/hour - $43.82/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable. Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). AHS Foothills Medical Center Operating Room will provide specialty Perioperative training. Commitment to a comprehensive 14-week training program, followed by a full-time orientation is required. This temporary one-year position is built upon two phases: Phase 1 - Perioperative didactic and clinical practicum - 14 weeks. Phase 2 - Orientation to solidify practical knowledge and skill - 38 weeks. Phase 2 requires successful completion of all criteria from phase 1. If an individual is not successful in completing phase 1, the temporary position would end (earlier than the expected, posted date). Completion of the perioperative nursing course is required. Ability to wear lead apron radiograph protection and any personal protective equipment (PPE) for an extended period of time. Ability to stand scrubbed for hours to support the surgical team.

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. 4th year nursing student focus experience Operating Room. Current ACLS or PALS certification.
